It is the most abundant AHL produced by the proteobacterium R. capsulatus and activates genetic exchange between R. capsulatus cells. N-hexadecanoyl-L-Homoserine lactone tends to localize in relatively lipophilic cellular environments of bacteria and cannot diffuse freely through the cell membrane.
