It is an actin interacting and calmodulin binding protein found in smooth muscle and other cell types. Caldesmon occurs in both a high molecular weight (120-150 kDa) and a low molecular weight (61-70 kDa) form, depending on the tissue in which it is located. Caldesmon plays a major role in the regulation of smooth muscle and non-muscle contractile events.
