A new molecular pathway has been defined in which activation of the recept o r -interacting protein （a serine-threonine kinase） a n d Jun amino-terminal kinase induced cell death with the m o r phology of autophagy. Autophagic death required Atg7 a n d beclin 1 a n d was induced by caspase-8 inhibition （3）.
